In today’s fast paced culture, many people are seeking a way to get away from all the stress and pressure of the everyday world, relax, and get in touch with their inner core. Meditation is an integral part of many religions, but you do not need to be associated with religion in order to learn meditation. One common meditation involves repeating a sound or word, called a mantra. Other types of meditation focus on a visual image, such as a symbol or the flame of a candle. Other meditations involve breathing and physical movement, such as pranayama or yoga. No matter what the technique, meditation helps an individual reach a state of deep, blissful, mental relaxation. Meditation is not a cure all for mental or physical ailments, but it can be a powerful aid. Those with physical or mental health conditions should consult with a health care professional before beginning a mediation practice.

Meditation can also be very physical, such as with the practice of yoga, or passive, such as with mindfulness mediation. In addition to the forms of meditation, there are different stages; generally, in early stages of a meditation practice, the practitioner is more aware of the practice. The individual will have difficulty focusing on their breath, or not reacting to their thoughts. But with practice, this will move into a second stage where one is much less aware of the techniques, and this is followed by a third stage of bliss, which is followed by a deep sense of self, and an ability to reach a deep stillness.
